The Book of Us: The Demon by Day6
Today was one of the days that I want to plug my headphones and listen to sad songs - something that I would do on a rainy day or just need a breather. Just happened that today felt a little overwhelming and some good music was essential in keeping away those thoughts even if it's just for a bit.
I will not dive deep into the album like all the other experts do out there - I just want to briefly share what I personally feel as I listened to their music from the perspective of a fan or listener. It just happened that their songs in this album fits the mood today, which led me to writing this to express my love for it. Just saying, I've been a My Day since their iconic 'Letting Go' (놓아 놓아 놓아)" back in 2016.

The cover of their latest album - The Book of Us: The Demon |
A week fresh from the release, presenting Day6 third chapter into the The Book Of Us series - The Book of Us: The Demon. Watch the trailer film below and listen to Jae and YoungK's (soothing) narration a they question the possibility of surviving this demon that is stopping two hearts from happiness.
The fact that I've always loved about Day6 is that everyone in the band gets to sing and contribute to the creative process of producing and writing lyrics. All of their voices blending in together is always heavenly to listen to.
#1 Day and Night (해와 달처럼) makes me want to dance with its cheery vibe where the lyrics talks about the concept of the trailer film. The demon playing around with hearts that are trying to get closer and closer. Wishing that there will be a day that the two hearts will meet.
Actually, if you try to get closer to me
For the meantime, it’ll get colder in between
Oh we have to go through this again I go up
And you go down
It’s always the same, like the sun and moon...
#2 Zombie is the title track for this album and it is the kind of song that makes you want to sing along even when you first don't understand what they are singing about. Then you get a deeper feeling once you understand the lyrics because it's so relatable. It talks about the struggle of living through the days but not being able to remember anything - and soon, you start to question what is there to this meaningless life and the possibility of getting through this.
Yeah we live a life
Eyes wide open in the dark
This meaningless life
Though I want to just let go
Though I want to just dream on
There’s nothing I can do no more
#3 Tick Tock talks about a relationship that is about to end. The beginning of this song was a little different but it gets better as it progresses to the chorus. Still doesn't sound like a break up song to me, it felt like it is just reminiscing over good memories for now as they compare their past with the present where there are no words exchanged - a quiet night where you can only hear tick tock from the clock.
I’m afraid when the conversation is over
Even between us
our relationship will end
And I’m not putting a period on it
#4 Love Me or Leave Me started off with a really good vibe, I love the guitar and Wonpil's opening. I can totally imagine myself vibing to this during their concert (yes, my bucket list!). The lyrics talks about a relationship growing apart and a party is starting to demand honesty - while clearly knowing that the answer to the question of 'Do you love me'?.
I've endured it for quite a while
The coldness in your eyes and words
Whether to finish it or not
It's all up to you now.
This is totally the song that I would jam with when I'm stressed out and just shouting together 'Baby love me or leave me tonight!"
#5 STOP started off really strong with the electric guitar as if to signal another potential break up song. Midway into the song, I'm already bobbing my head to the rhythm and singing because I too am done with your excuses - 때려쳐!
이제 넌 너 대로 (Now you do you)
걘 걔 하던 대로 (And they do they)
원래 살던 대로 (How you used to live)
만나기 전 그 때로 (To the time before we met)
다시 돌아가버려 (Go back to that time)
못 듣겠어 더는 (I can't listen anymore)
때려쳐 (Stop!)
#6 1 to 10 talks about the devotion in a one-sided love where the entire song emphasizes on that one line. All the pain and insecure as you asked the other person what else I could do to keep you from leaving. It's basically saying I'll do anything from 1 to 10 to prove this:
Nobody loves you more than me, baby
Nobody loves you more than me, baby
#7 Afraid started off with a soft piano - that was enough to capture my attention from the start and I knew it was going to be a good one. It speaks so well of the insecurities that one may feel not good enough for the other. I love the metaphor used to describe the fear of clouding the moon's brightness with the dark sky. No doubt, this song is absolutely my favourite.
나를 보며 웃는 이 순간조차 (This moment when you look and smile at me)
나를 알기 전의 네 시간보다 (I don't think I could make you happier than before you knew me)
행복하게 해주지 못할 것 같아서 (I don’t think I’d make you happy)
I’m so afraid
I’m so afraid
나처럼 돼 버릴까 (That you would become like me)
놓을 수도 잡을 수도 없어 (I can neither let you go nor hold you back)
Overall, I LOVE IT! I think Day6 killed it with this EP and I think this might just be the best one yet in terms of lyricism, constant quality and amazing vocals as always. How each of their voices carry the same amount of emotions has always been something I look forward to hearing in every EP and this one is an all-kill. I doubt there are any other bands out there that are as versatile and innovative as these guys. Can't wait to see what they have in store for the future!
